Oats Idli

Enjoy the feel of idli with the superpowers of oats!

MAKES: 14 pieces

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/2 cup powdered oats (grind rolled oats into a mixture and use)

  • 1 cup suji / semolina

  • 1 cup plain yoghurt

  • 1 grated carrot

  • 2 green chillis (finely chopped)

  • 1 tsp chana dal

  • 1 tsp urad dal

  • 8 - 10 curry leaves (finely chopped)

  • 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves

  • 8 whole cashews broken into small pieces

  • 1 - 1 1/2 cup water (it will depend on how much water your suji takes in)

  • 1 - 1 1/2 tsp salt as per taste

  • 1 heaped tsp Eno fruit salt

  • 2 tbsp oil

  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Method

  1. Take oats and add add suji, grated carrots, chillis, coriander and lemon juice.

  2. Mix with water and keep aside.

  3. Take a pan. Heat 2 tbsp oil. Add both the dals, curry leaves and cashews. Roast till the cashews turn pink and the dal leaves an aroma. Add this to the oats mixture and leave for 30 minutes.

  4. Now, add Eno. Adjust the water level if needed and beat to a batter consistency.

  5. Pour 1 - 2 glasses of water in an idli steamer.

  6. Grease the idli moulds and pour in the batter. Put them into the idli steamer and steam for 20 minutes on medium heat. Insert a toothpick and check if the idlis are done. If they are not, you can steam for 5 more minutes.

  7. Serve hot with coconut chutney and sambhar if you wish.

Helpful Tips

  • If the batter consistency is too thick, the idlis will turn out hard.
